DRAWING REFERENCE: APPLES AND ROUND FRUIT
YOU'LL NEED: drawing paper or copy paper torn to a few inches larger than the size of your object, pencil, eraser, apple or other fruit
You've already learned how to find the shapes of objects and use them to create more accurate drawings. Today, you'll discover a new way of seeing that artists use all the time.
When we look at an object, such as a piece of fruit, we usually focus on the object itself. Artists call these the positive shapes. But there is another important shape to notice—the empty spaces around and between the objects. These are called negative shapes.
By studying both the positive and negative shapes, artists can check their drawing and make it more accurate. Looking at the empty spaces may feel unusual at first, but it can help you see your drawing in a completely new way!
Remember, drawing is not about getting everything perfect the first time. Artists often redraw lines, erase, and make adjustments as they observe more carefully.
The objects you are drawing are called positive shapes.
The spaces between, around, and inside those objects are called negative shapes.
Both types of shapes are important and can help you create a more accurate drawing.
As you compare your drawing to the objects you are observing, you may notice lines that need to move or shapes that need to change. Don't be afraid to erase and redraw. Making adjustments is a normal part of the artistic process.
Learning to see both positive and negative shapes helps artists draw what they actually see instead of what they think they see. This skill can improve your accuracy and help you notice details you might have missed before.
The more you practice looking at shapes and spaces, the stronger your observation skills will become.
Enjoy this short 5-minute lesson and create a drawing! Look carefully at both the objects and the spaces around them, and discover a new way of seeing like an artist.
Happy Drawing!
